The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has expressed its disappointment and sadness over the resumption of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s case in court which is slated to commence next week.
In a statement on Wednesday which was sent to The Eastern Updates, the spokesperson of the group, Emma Powerful, submitted that they were disappointed in the Federal Government for revisiting the matter it believed was already ruled upon.
He said: “The Supreme Court justices mishandled justice by quashing the Appeal Court’s judgment in Nnamdi Kanu’s case. The judgment came to the world as a big surprise. All Nigerians and non-Nigerians have doubt that the judiciary delivered justice on this matter even as Abuja High Court commences the trial of Kanu on February 8, 2024. This is following the order by the Supreme Court’s minority ruling.

“The Supreme Court delivered a confusing judgment against Kanu on December 15, 2023, when the justices affirmed that it was unlawful for the Nigerian government to have arrested and brought Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria. But, they still stopped the landmark decision and judgment of the appeal court justices. They also affirmed that Kanu did not jump bail, which was the main reason that the Nigerian government broke international laws and treaty of extradition.
“By arresting him, they lost all their rights to try him. On what grounds did the Justices return the case back to the High Court after he won the case in appeal court? Why will the justices set aside the judgment of the appeal court that discharged and acquitted him but refused to deliver their own independent judgment on the matter?
“The public should take note that the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed February 8, 2024, as a date to commence what would be a scripted or endless case and Kanu will be represented at the court by his legal team. The international community, the Human Right Organisation and Civil Society groups should be aware that and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are being persecuted by the Nigerian government for peacefully championing self-determination. Kanu has been detained in a solidarity confinement for almost three years. He has been denied access to visitors of his choice as permitted by the High Court in Nigeria.
“He is being subjected to all manner of ill treatment. His health has deteriorated and he doesn’t have access to quality medications and professional private physicians,” Powerful submitted.
