It was a sad day for traders as fire engulfed a section of the popular Nkpor Main market in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, near the commercial city of Onitsha, destroying goods worth ₦300,000 million.
The Eastern Updates gathered that the inferno occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
As a result, before the state fire service personnel arrived on the scene, the traders had already managed to organise and put out the fire, which had destroyed more than thirty stores.
The Chairman of the market, Paul Okafor, confirmed the unfortunate incident and told journalists in his office that the Fire started from a cold room shop and spread to nearby shops.
‘We call on the state and local governments and public-spirited individuals and groups to come to the aid of the affected traders to bounce back to business as soon as possible.

‘Goods worth over N300 million were damaged in the inferno, and the traders are now counting their losses. This is not good for this yuletide.’
In another report, the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a couple for trafficking one month old baby into Anambra State from Lagos.
The couple confessed to buying the child for ₦30,000, after they were arrested at Bridgehead Onitsha, while travelling into Anambra from Lagos, after a tip off by a fellow passenger.
A press release issued by the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP. Tochukwu Ikenga, said: ‘The interception was made at Bridgehead in Onitsha on December 17, 2023.
‘The couples were travelling in a luxury bus belonging to a popular transport company with the baby when a co-passenger observed that the mother could not breastfeed the baby despite its cry for food in the course of the journey.
‘The good Samaritan put a call through to Anambra Police on its Control Room hotline in Awka, which then relayed the information to the police at Bridgehead in Onitsha.
‘The police laid in wait for the luxury bus described and intercepted it in the evening hours. The couple and the baby were identified and brought down for questioning.
‘They confessed buying the child from its mother in Ajah, Lagos for the sum of N30,000.’
Ikenga said that the Commissioner of Police, CP. Aderemi Adeoye, thanked the public spirited citizen for his concern and giving the information that led to the rescue of the child.
