The Enugu State Police Command has officially acknowledged the arrest of Somadina Orji, responding to accusations of the gravest nature—murdering his mother and sister, followed by the burial of their bodies in their backyard.

Born in Igboariam, Anambra State, Somadina is said to have committed the crime on December 4, 2023, in Umuagu Inyi, Oji River Local Government Area, Enugu State.

Longtime inhabitants of their family residence, Charity Orji and her daughter Ukamaka encountered enduring difficulties. Charity, with roots in Inyi but married in Igboariam, confronted continuous issues with her son.

Narrating the sequence of events, community leader Ben Obi explained that the conflict had escalated weeks earlier due to an altercation between Somadina and his younger brother. Worried about her younger son’s safety, Charity sought the community’s assistance.

The narrative took a dark turn when Charity, returning from a condolence visit, was purportedly killed by Somadina. The revelation of the crime stemmed from the suspicions of her younger son.

He said, ‘When the villagers gathered at the compound upon interrogation, Somadina confessed that he had killed the mother.’

He also confessed that he killed the younger sister some weeks ago. Barrister Ben also said that when the Police were invited, the remains of the mother and the sister were exhumed and deposited at the mortuary, and the suspect was arrested.

Ben also explained that Charity, until her death sold fufu to feed her Family.

He implored the government to intervene, seeking their assistance to prevent similar incidents in the future.

While condemning the incident, Ejike Tasie, the coordinating president general in Oji River, expressed deep concern about the widespread use of hard drugs in the Inyi Community. He urged the anti-drug agency in Oji River to actively address and mitigate drug abuse across various communities in the local government.

Speaking to Punch, the Command spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, verified the incident and announced the arrest of the suspect, emphasizing that investigations were in progress.

Ndukwe stated that once the investigation is complete, the suspect will be promptly presented in court for arraignment.

He said, ‘The suspect has been arrested, and the case is under investigation. The suspect would be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.’
