Police in Anambra have smashed a suspected gun-running syndicate and recovered arms and ammunition.
DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, police spokesman in the state stated on Saturday that 23 automatic pump action guns and 625 live cartridges were recovered in the process.
“Three suspected members of the syndicate were arrested in Onitsha while the investigation is being expanded,” Ikenga stated.

He added that the breakthrough followed weeks of intensive police surveillance of the syndicate.
In another report the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Augustina Ogbodo has confirmed the killing of two police officers that were on patrol at Nwofe Road in Izzi LGA of the state.
The commissioner made this known in a statement signed and made available to The Eastern Updates by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya.
The CP stated that the victims were allegedly attacked by armed hoodlums suspected to be IPOB/ESN members using a tinted Toyota Highlander vehicle while on patrol at Nwofe Road at the outskirt of Abakaliki.
The statement reads in part: ‘Operatives of the Command on patrol at Nwofe road at the outskirt of Abakaliki were attacked by armed hoodlums suspected to be IPOB/ESN members using a tinted Highlander vehicle with registration number unknown.’
‘Two(2) of the Operatives were fatally wounded while one (1) is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.’
The CP further stated that the Command received a distress call and immediately dispatched tactical teams to the scene. The operatives swung into action by giving the hoodlums a hot chase but they escaped.
