Step Into BVAS Access Dispute With REC – Edeoga To INEC Chair

Listen to article

The Labour Party’s candidate for the Enugu State 2023 gubernatorial election, Barr Chijioke Edeoga, has submitted a petition to INEC Chairman Mahmoud Yakubu.

The petition accuses the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Chukwuemeka Chukwu, of denying Edeoga’s team access to inspect electoral materials, particularly the Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS).

In his petition directly issued to the INEC boss, Edeoga lamented the REC’s refusal to allow his legal team and experts access to vital electoral materials, despite specific instructions stating otherwise.

The LP candidate’s legal representatives drafted a letter to the INEC Chairman, specifically requesting access to the BVAS machines employed during the March governorship election.

Dated June 26, 2023, and received by INEC on July 3, 2023, the letter served as a reminder to the INEC boss regarding the tribunal’s scheduled hearing of the petition on July 7, 2023. It underscored the critical need for access to the machines and urged the electoral umpire to facilitate their access.

As per Edeoga’s account, following the REC’s reported denial of access, a fresh letter was dispatched on Monday, July 6, 2023, reemphasizing the importance of obtaining access to the materials and reminding the INEC Chairman accordingly.

The letter partly resds: ‘I want to inform you that in Enugu, the LP is being frustrated from inspecting the BVAS machines, notwithstanding the numerous court orders issued in that regard.’

The LP candidate humbly sought the help of the INEC chairman, urging him to use his influence to ensure that the REC permits his team access to the BVAS machines, as mandated by the order issued by the tribunal.
