A clash between rival cult groups in Awka, Anambra State, turned deadly on Friday when two suspected members from opposing factions were allegedly shot and killed. The incident notes the ongoing issue of cult violence and its devastating impact on communities.
It’s reported that the attack transpired at about 11 AM near Ukwuoji Bus Stop, which is situated along Zik’s Avenue in Awka.
While an exact motive for the attack is yet to be established, it is believed that the cultists entered the area and commenced a battle for supremacy, creating a chaotic situation by firing gunshots into the air.
According to an eyewitness present at the scene, ‘The hoodlums numbering about five persons invaded the area in a tinted glass vehicle and started shooting into the air and in the process, shot down their victims and thereafter escaped.’
‘We were all here when it happened, and immediately they invaded the area, gunshots started going up in the air, two of their members were shot and everyone scampered to safety, and the other cultists used the opportunity to escape.’
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Public Relations Officer, was approached for information regarding the alleged killings. Although he did not officially confirm the fatalities, he acknowledged that there had been instances of gunfire in the vicinity.
‘There is no information like the killing of anyone before me. But police operatives have intensified patrols within Awka following the sound of gunshots at the Ukwuoji Bus Stop in Awka.’
‘Information gathered at the scene from the eyewitnesses showed it is cult-related,’ Ikenga said.
