Listen to article

The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the South-East and the South-South Governors to as a matter of urgency evacuate all Igbo students from the crisis-ridden University of Jos.

The Eastern Updates reports this is coming on the heels of an outcry from the leadership of Igbo students in the institution.

President of the Federation of Igbo students, University of Jos, Comrade Boniface Ifechukwu had cried out that the students were being killed and maimed even as at yesterday, Sunday.

He said regrettably, only the Governors of Enugu and Abia States have evacuated students from the area.

Reacting to the development, the President-General of OYC, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike urged the governors of all Igbo-speaking states to quickly deploy all State apparatus and rescue the students.

The news we are getting from the University of Jos is not palatable at all. Igbo students are still being killed and we are not going to fold our hands.

‘The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Council Worldwide, therefore, ask the governors to activate all emergency codes and see to the evacuation of these students.

‘We commend in a big way the Governors of Enugu and Abia States, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu for taking a leading step. However, the silence of the other governors is not a good one at all.

‘Let us not wait till such a time we have mass casualty and they will now begin to declare one week mourning. We hereby send an SOS to the governors because these students belong to our Constituency. The time to act is now,’ Okwu said.
