Post COVID-19: Anambra Community Protests ‘Imposition’ Of Levies

Some people of Ifitedunu community in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra state have protested against an alleged imposition of coronavirus and burial levies on them. urged government intervention.

The protesters, numbering about 50, stormed the state government house in Awka on Saturday with placards of different inscription, some which read, “’We are dying of illegal levies in Ifitedunu, PG, Stop Extortions, PG, Stop Violation of New Anambra Burial Laws, Ifitedunu Supports Obiano Administration.”

Spokesman of the group, Engr Uchechukwu Ogoemeka, while presenting their demands to governor Willie Obiano, alleged that President General of the community, Mr Uche Oragwuncha, imposed burial levy of N100, 000 on every bereaved family as well as a COVID-19 levy of N5000 on all taxable adults in the community in the name of the state government.

According to him, the community had no issue with the state government, but “Our PG had also mismanaged state government Covid-19 palliatives to the Community. He has also created rancour and division among the peace-loving people of Ifitedunu by unnecessarily pitching them against one another. We request the State Government to call the PG to order to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the area.”

Responding, Anambra state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Greg Obi, represented by a staff of the ministry, Mr Henry Nwasike, urged them to remain peaceful and law abiding, assuring that the state government would look into their demands.
