Armed assailants stormed a home in KwaMakhutha township outside Durban shortly before 11:00 pm on Tuesday and shot 11 people dead, KwaZulu-Natal provincial authorities and police said, with three others surviving the attack.
Thamsanqa Ntuli, premier of KwaZulu-Natal province, said the victims, who included a pregnant woman, had gathered at the house when the attackers entered and opened fire. Local broadcaster eNCA reported that the assailants forced everyone present into a room before shooting them and setting fire to a car belonging to one of the victims. Police said the motive had not been established but that investigators were pursuing what they described as a promising lead.
“The incident has left the community in profound shock and grief,” Ntuli said.
Acting national police commissioner Puleng Dimpane said she had activated a 72-hour tracking operation to locate the attackers. “There is no place in our communities for the senseless taking of human lives,” she said in a statement, calling on officers to mobilise all available resources to bring those responsible before the courts.

KwaMakhutha, a township roughly 29 kilometers southwest of Durban within the eThekwini metropolitan area, has a documented history of mass violence against its residents that long predates Tuesday’s attack. In January 1987, gunmen killed 13 people, mostly women and children, in a raid on the home of a local anti-apartheid activist, an assault later tied in court testimony to state-sponsored paramilitary training provided to a rival political movement during the apartheid era. Two former members of that movement were later granted amnesty for their role in planning the killings. A drive-by shooting in the same township in January 2022 killed three young men and wounded seven more, an attack police attributed at the time to unresolved community tension rather than a single organized motive.
The Eastern Update has gathered that Tuesday’s shooting is the deadliest single incident recorded in KwaMakhutha since the apartheid-era massacre, and comes as national murder figures have been trending downward even as individual mass-casualty attacks continue to occur. South African Police Service data released in late August showed 5,427 murders nationally between April and June this year, a 5.9 percent decline from the same quarter in 2025, with KwaZulu-Natal recording a provincial murder rate of 8.8 per 100,000 people — lower than the Eastern Cape and Western Cape but still accounting for over a fifth of the country’s murders during the first three months of the year, according to police figures released in May.
Dimpane, addressing the broader pattern of firearm violence in South Africa, said the country has a large circulation of both legal and illegal weapons, and that shootings are frequently driven by rivalry between gangs and competition among informal businesses operating in townships. President Cyril Ramaphosa has separately described the country’s overall crime levels as one of the most serious threats facing South Africa, and the government deployed soldiers to violence hotspots nationwide in March to support police operations against what officials called rampant criminal activity.
A resident who spoke to eNCA said several of the dead were people he had grown up with.

“It’s shocking and sad. It’s like a movie,” he said, adding that he had never witnessed anything comparable in the area during his lifetime there.
Police have not released the identities of those killed or disclosed further detail on the “promising” lead investigators are following. The 72-hour tracking window Dimpane activated places pressure on provincial detectives to identify suspects before the operation’s initial deadline, though South African police have in past cases extended such operations when leads remained active.
KwaZulu-Natal’s premier’s office said it was monitoring the police investigation and had not, as of Wednesday, announced any additional provincial resources beyond the tracking operation already under way. No arrests had been reported by Wednesday.
Provincial police statistics released this year have repeatedly shown KwaZulu-Natal trailing Gauteng and the Western Cape in total murder counts while still ranking among the country’s most violent provinces, with Durban’s Inanda precinct and Durban Central among the police stations SAPS has flagged nationally for high rates of serious, community-reported crime. National authorities have cautioned against reading quarterly declines as evidence that the underlying threat has eased. Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, discussing the most recent national figures in August, said the reduction in murders still left the country with dozens of killings every day and did not amount to South Africans being safe. Dimpane echoed that caution in her own statement on the earlier quarter’s figures, saying every case still represented a life that should not have been lost.
