Recent reports from the Nigeria Army have revealed that its troops who were deployed for counter terrorism operations in Ebonyi State have repelled an attack on Isheke Police Station by suspected Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, terrorists.

The attack resulted in the burning of the facility and several vehicles.

The Army, in a statement on its X handle on Thursday, said the troops, on arrival at the scene, launched a counter-attack on the terrorists overpowering and compelling them to flee in disarray.

“Accordingly, troops engaged the terrorists in a hot pursuit, leading to an intense gun battle, which resulted in the elimination of five suspected terrorists and seizure of several weapons,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the troops recovered one PKT Machine Gun with a link belt containing 94 rounds of ammunition, 2 AK-47 rifles with 3 magazines containing 11 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, one Sub Machine Gun with a magazine, and a Sienna SUV with registration number Ebonyi CHR-364JC.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to operate in synergy with sister services and other security agencies to combat the terrorists’ activities by IPOB and its armed affiliate, the ESN.

“We urge all law-abiding citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity to the security agencies,” the statement added.

In other news, in anticipation of the October 1 protest, the Nigeria Police Force has dispatched officers to critical areas, as organizers remain committed to proceeding with the demonstration on Independence Day as scheduled.

This protest, if it happens, would be the second in two months, as Nigerians continue to voice their anger over the economic difficulties brought about by the hike in petrol prices, electricity tariffs, and the floating of the naira under President Tinubu’s administration.

According to the organizers, the #FearlessOctober1 protest serves as a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance movement, which took place from August 1 to August 10.

The group further noted that the recent protest was prompted by the Federal Government’s neglect of their demands, which include hunger, the increasing cost of living, security challenges, government waste, electoral reform, and improvements in human capital development.
