Hon. Emeka Joseph Orji, the Transition Committee Chairman for Onitsha South local government area in Anambra State, clinched victory at the 2023 Nigerian Local Government Merit Award – LOGMA.

He stood out as a stellar performer among local government chairmen nationwide, showcasing exceptional leadership marked by service excellence and unwavering accountability.

The LOGMA 2023 honor was conferred upon Hon. Orji during the certificate presentation ceremony, where he was recognized as the winner alongside twenty-one other council chairmen across Nigeria. The event, hosted by Landmark Magazine, unfolded at the Nigeria National Merit Award House in Maitama, Abuja, adding a touch of grandeur to the recent proceedings.

Addressing the audience at the awards presentation, Chief Bayode Ojo, Board Chairman of Landmark Magazine, underscored the award’s intent to spotlight the achievements of council leaders. The accolade was crafted to recognize and reward excellence in grassroots governance.

In his congratulatory remarks to the award winners, Chief Bayode Ojo acknowledged their achievement in making the final list, having undergone rigorous scrutiny that included spot-checks of their executed projects. He went on to encourage the awardees to uphold their role as exceptional models for sustainable growth in both local and national contexts.

Chief Bayode Ojo urged the federal government to embark on a proactive process towards granting financial autonomy to local governments. This strategic move is pivotal for empowering leaders at the third tier to enhance their effectiveness in meeting mandates.

In his goodwill message at the well-attended event, the Honorable Minister of Special Duties & Inter-Governmental Affairs, Rt. Hon. Zaphaniah Bitrus Jisalo represented by Mrs Ehujoh Patience lauded the Council’s Chairmen for their steadfast commitment to the advancement of their various communities.

He noted that the event was not only a celebration of the dedicated leaders who have tirelessly served the local governments, but also a testament to the enduring spirit of excellence and selfless commitment to public service that has defined our great nation.

The Minister urged council leaders to re-dedicate themselves to the principles of good governance, accountability, and service to the people. He highlighted the remarkable achievements in localizing good governance and playing an outstanding leadership role in the creation of a sustainable, livable, and prosperous smart council area, amidst numerous people-oriented programs and projects in Onitsha South local government area.
