Abia: Bus Passengers Trapped Under Fallen Truck

Listen to article

Tragedy struck on Sunday as a bus filled with passengers heading to celebrate Christmas was involved in a devastating accident in Ohafia, Abia State. Initial reports suggest that several lives may have been lost in the horrific crash, leaving the community in shock and mourning during what was meant to be a festive season.

The devastating crash occurred at the crumbling Mmuri Bridge, a notorious stretch of the Bende-Abam-Ohafia road, which has long been in a state of disrepair. The bridge, often described as a hazard by locals, became the site of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of several passengers.

Eyewitnesses have reported that the truck, loaded with heavy construction materials, swerved to avoid a perilously damaged section of the Mmuri Bridge. In the process, it toppled over onto a 10-seater bus, which was packed with passengers, further intensifying the tragedy and highlighting the risks posed by the bridge’s dilapidated state.

The force of the collision pinned passengers beneath the weight of the heavy truck, as desperate efforts from local youths and other well-meaning individuals ensued. In a scene of urgency and unity, the community gathered to assist in rescuing the trapped victims, their hands straining against the truck’s mass in a race against time.

However, the heaviness of the truck and its content frustrated the rescue efforts of the youths.

A few of the passengers were overheard groaning in low voices for help from under the bus. Two of the trapped victims were children who were traveling with their mother for Christmas.

An indigene of Ohafia, Ukpai Onuoha, lamented that the bridge has been in terrible condition for many years, causing accidents and other inconveniences.

He accused Abia State politicians of failed promises to fix the bridge. As of the time of this report, no official report has been issued by the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, on the incident to determine the actual number of victims.
