Survey activities have officially commenced at the proposed site for Abia International Airport in Nsulu, as confirmed by the state government. The initiative marks a milestone in the development of the airport, with officials assuring that compensation for land donors will be handled in accordance with the Land Use Act.

The government’s transparency and focus on fair compensation are intended to smooth the path toward a project that promises to transform the region’s transportation and economic landscape.

Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, addressed journalists to announce that a detailed survey will be conducted on the lands earmarked for the Abia International Airport. He reassured landowners that compensation would be promptly and fairly administered in accordance with the project’s legal framework, reinforcing the government’s dedication to ensuring that those affected are properly recognized for their contributions.

Chukwumerije’s comments came after protests by residents of donor communities over the weekend, who voiced their concerns about the land acquisition process for the proposed airport. The commissioner acknowledged their frustrations and reassured them that their interests would be protected, with compensation distributed according to legal guidelines.

Chukwumerije also noted that Caleb Ajagba, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, and Okorougo Aji, the Special Assistant on Lands and Housing, had undertaken extensive talks with the people from the seven land donor communities in Nsulu.

These negotiations were crucial in fostering understanding and ensuring that the process would proceed smoothly, with all parties fully informed and compensated.

As per the Commissioner’s statement, a solid understanding was achieved with the land donor communities, marking the commencement of joint survey operations. These operations were a collaborative effort between the Office of the Surveyor General of Abia State and the youth leaders of the Nsulu donor communities, ensuring their involvement in the critical process.

“At the commencement of the survey on Saturday, November 30, 2024, some members of the Umunna Nsulu protested not being carried along.

“The Chief of Staff to the Governor was quick to address them and reassured them that anybody that felt he or she had not been carried along will be appropriately engaged,” he said.
