Santiago Pena, the President of Paraguay, was officially released from a Rio de Janeiro hospital on Tuesday, a day after being admitted for illness while attending the G20 summit. The hospital’s spokesperson confirmed that Pena, who had been observed overnight, was recovering well and would continue his activities following his release.
The 46-year-old Paraguayan President, Santiago Pena, was rushed to the Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro after local reports confirmed that he had experienced chest pains. Eyewitnesses from the G20 summit described how he was quickly whisked away by ambulance, highlighting the swift response to his medical emergency.
“The head of state was discharged from hospital early in the morning,” and was free to “continue his agenda,” the hospital said in a statement.
The hospital further clarified that after a thorough examination, doctors had ruled out any heart-related issues or other serious health conditions. In a video shared by the Paraguayan presidency, President Pena reassured the public, stating that he had made a full recovery and was feeling well once again.
The Health Minister, Maria Teresa Baran, reported that the results of President Pena’s medical tests came back entirely normal, confirming his sound health. Still, she advised him to take a period of rest to aid in his recovery and prevent any further strain.
Even though Paraguay does not belong to the G20, President Pena was invited to join the summit along with other non-member country leaders, a gesture initiated by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who hosted the event.

Before falling ill, Pena had been giving a presentation on the economic situation of his country to other summit participants, notably on poverty reduction.
In the video, a smiling Pena spoke of an emotional few days with his birthday on Saturday and Paraguay playing Bolivia in a football World Cup qualifier match.
“All these emotions somehow altered my mood,” Pena said by way of explanation, adding he was “strong” now to represent his country at the G20 meeting closing Tuesday.
