With the aim of strengthening the state’s political dynamics, the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is pushing for a formidable opposition that will keep the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on its toes, driving them to achieve greater heights in governance and service delivery.

During a courtesy visit to the Ebonyi State Police Command on Tuesday, Steve Oruruo, chairman of the PDP’s caretaker committee, emphasized the need for a robust opposition, speaking alongside other party executives at the command’s headquarters in Abakaliki, where they met with Commissioner of Police Augustina Ogbodo.

The PDP has vowed to intensify its political game, aiming to give the APC a fierce contest in upcoming elections and potentially upset the ruling party’s applecart.

Following visits to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and Department of State Service (DSS), Steve Oruruo emphasized that the people of Ebonyi State are eagerly awaiting a viable alternative to the ruling APC, a gap that the PDP is poised to fill in the near future.

“PDP has bounced back in Ebonyi. If you are passing through the secretariat, you will see signs that the party is bouncing back. But the party must admit that it is an opposition party and as an opposition party, they have to stay united. The strongest point or part of an opposition party is that sense of unison, a sense of oneness.

“If they remain very strong, united, one accord with a clear vision, they are going to triumph. So, our target is to provide a party that will be running elections and winning elections in Ebonyi. We want a party that people can trust and say let their first eleven join this party and win elections for their people.

“We want to create a plurality of opinion, we want a situation where people will have a chance to talk from another perspective. A society without an opposition party is deemed for life.

“So, we need a vibrant opposition party to put pressure on the sitting government to even perform better. It serves the people well that we have a very strong PDP in the state”, Oruruo stated.

The Chairman described the police as a partner in the advancement of democracy in the country, calling for security in the activities of the party in the state.

The police are a partner as far as democracy is concerned. You need the police, their dexterity, and their performances for democracy to thrive.

“They have been of expertise, they have been of competences and have shown commitment, they have lost lives, they have done everything to ensure that we have democracy.

“So, if you are looking for security and you intend to have fairness in applications, you must have orderliness and in that orderliness, you cannot distance the police from it”, he stated.

CP Ogbodo assured the PDP caretaker committee that the police would maintain neutrality and ensure a safe and secure environment for all political parties to conduct their affairs without fear of molestation or disruption.

Ogbodo committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, promising to tackle official matters with objectivity, fairness, and decisiveness, untainted by personal sentiments or biases.
