The Abakaliki Chief Magistrates’ Court has decided to keep Uzo IfeanyiChukwu, aged 19, in custody as he faces trial for the alleged possession of a firearm.

However, IfeanyiChukwu’s plea was disregarded by the court, given that he is confronting two accusations involving conspiracy and firearm possession.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Lilian Ogodo, directed the defendant’s detention in the correctional center, highlighting the court’s jurisdictional limitations in handling the charge.

Ogodo added that the case file and all exhibits be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

Ogodo adjourned the matter to March 29

Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Eze Ndubuaku told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 25 at Aguogboriga, Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

Ndubuaku said that IfeanyiChukwu unlawfully had in his possession on the fateful day a locally fabricated pistol.

The Prosecutor said that the offence contravened section 3 of the Robbery and Firearms (special provision) Act CAP R 11 Laws of the Federation, 2006.

Mr. Solomon Nwogbaga, representing the defense, appealed to the court for bail on behalf of his client.

Objecting to the bail application, Prosecutor Ndubuaku cautioned that granting bail might enable the defendant to cause additional disturbances within the community.
