Erosion Woes: Abia Residents Speak Up On Ovom, Eziama Roads

Listen to article

This weekend saw residents of Ovom Street and Eziama in Aba, Abia State, sounding the alarm about the dire effects of gully erosion plaguing their neighborhoods.

Their grievances underscored the gravity of the threat posed by the menace to their lives and properties, emphasizing the widespread destruction wrought upon numerous buildings and indispensable economic assets.

Aba residents voiced their feelings openly as they welcomed Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, the member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, during his visit to assess the damage caused by erosion on the roads.

With genuine concern, resident Mr. Bright Ndubueze called upon the Abia State Government to provide assistance and support to the community, which has been left struggling in the wake of the disaster that has disrupted their livelihoods.

Madam Eunice Nwanoru, a trader, expressed her dismay over the road in the area, which has turned into a perilous trap due to the effects of gully erosion.

She noted that if nothing urgent is done to curtail the menace, it could destroy more houses.

She said, “This is not our first time in crying out to government over the gully erosion that had already cut off the road.

“You can see that the erosion menace on this road is expanding every rainy season towards public buildings. And we know when such ugly incident happens, many lives are being lost.

“So, I want to use this medium to call on relevant federal and state government agencies and ministries to intervene and reconstruct our road, in order to avert looming danger rearing on our faces.”

During the inspection, Ikwechegh frowned upon the inadequate state of the road infrastructure in the area and assured the residents that he would prioritize the issue at the National Assembly to facilitate the necessary improvements.

The lawmaker committed to launching swift palliative measures on the road to halt any additional degradation.
