Gunmen Kill Police Officer At Checkpoint In Ebonyi State

A yet to be identified policeman was, on Wednesday, killed by some gunmen at a checkpoint in Ebonyi State.

The incident as it was gathered, had taken place at the G-Hostel Junction which is located near the popular PRESCO Junction, in the Abakaliki Metropolis.

The gunmen, who were said to be three in number had also been operating with a motorcycle.

They had reportedly opened fire on the policemen at the checkpoint, killing one instantly.

In the gun duel that ensued, the police killed one of the hoodlums, just as the remaining two made good their escape.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident, but said it was still gathering information on the attack.

In another report, an Inspector of Police, whose name was given as Okebata, has allegedly shot dead a police sergeant identified as Iseke Korodama and four others.

The incident, which occurred midnight yesterday, caused panic within the state’s police command.

The Eastern Updates gathered on Friday that the incident, which took place at Agwa- Ejemekwuru Road in the Oguta Local Government Area of the state, had three other police officers and their civilian driver injured.

Police sources told newsmen that the inspector that allegedly shot his colleague is from the Ambassador Unit of the Police Tactical Unit at the command headquarters but was on duty in Egbema.

‘The victims are the operatives from the Surveillance team of the command headquarters. The attacking team is from the Ambassador Unit,’ the source said.

It was further gathered that the victims were riding in an unmarked vehicle when attacked.
