South-East PDP Caucus Picks Ekwunife As Senate Minority Leader

The South-east caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Senate has called on the National Chairman of the party, Sen Iyorchia Ayu, to nominate the lawmaker representing Anambra central, Uche Ekwunife, as the Minority Leader in the red chambers of the national assembly.

The Eastern Updates reports that the request came on the heels of the resignation of Enyinnaya Abaribe, senator representing Abia South

Recall that the lawmaker had announced his resignation after withdrawing from the PDP governorship primary in Abia State over alleged irregularities among party stakeholders.

A letter dated June 1 and jointly issued by Chimaroke Nnamani, Theodore Orji, Sam Egwu, Oyenwuchi Francis, Ike Ekweremadu, Obinna Ogba, Michael Nnachi and Chukwuka Utazi to Ayu, senators from the Southeast said they want Ekwunife to replace Abaribe.

The letter reads in part, ‘Following the resignation of our senate minority leader, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia) from the PDP last week, we the underlisted PDP Senators of the south-east zone hereby nominate Distinguished Senator Uche Lilian Ekwunife as a replacement for Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as the position was zoned to the South East’.

Meanwhile, Ekwunife had last week won the ticket of the Anambra Central Senatorial ticket of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP unopposed ahead of next year’s general elections.
