Strike: ASUU To Shut Down All Nigerian Universities Friday

Listen to article

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has announced plans to shut down all public universities in Nigeria indefinitely from Friday.

The union disclosed this in a terse statement on its official X account on Tuesday.

The decision will be implemented if the Federal Government fails to meet all its demands, including fair remuneration and improved working conditions for lecturers, to stem the ongoing exodus of academic talent from Nigerian universities.

“All universities will be closed nationwide till further notice on Friday,” the union wrote on X.

The Eastern Updates reports that ASUU rejected the 35 per cent salary proposal by the Federal Government.

Recall that in October, ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike for renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and to address other outstanding issues affecting the university system.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations with all tertiary institutions-based unions.

This was as the NLC frowned at the no-work-no-pay policy introduced by the government as a form of sanction to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities for daring to embark on a nationwide strike.

The president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero made this known in an interactive session with labour correspondents on Monday in Abuja.

The Eastern Updates reports that the interactive session comes after the meeting between the NLC and leaders of tertiary institutions’ based unions at the NLC headquarters in Abuja.

“We have decided to give the federal government four weeks to conclude all negotiations in this sector. They have started talks with ASUU but the problem in this sector goes beyond ASUU.

“That is why we are extending this to four weeks. If after four weeks this negotiation is not concluded, the organs of the NEC will meet and take a nationwide action that all workers in the country, all unions in the country will be involved so that we get to the root of all this.
