Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the hilltop residence of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, is a “Mecca of sort” to Nigerians because of his leadership qualities.

Jonathan stated this on Sunday in Minna when he led other well-wishers on a visit to Babangida to mark his 84th birthday.

He described the former military president as a committed leader who consistently stood for the unity of the country.

“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the country.

“That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sort. People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of IBB,” he said.

According to him, Babangida never saw himself as a sectional leader, but as one who believed in the unity of Nigeria.

Jonathan said the former military president would continue to be celebrated because of his contributions to national unity.

“Our prayer for him is for God to grant him a long life so that he can continue to mentor the younger ones to follow his exemplary footsteps,” he stated.

Highlights of the low-key birthday celebration included prayers and symbolic gifts from well-wishers.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, on Saturday, said he might be Nigeria’s president from the Southeast when it’s God’s time.

Umahi disclosed that the Southeast will produce Nigeria’s president when it’s God’s time.

He spoke on Saturday during a courtesy visit from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and his team, who were in Ebonyi to inspect various federal projects.

The former governor of Ebonyi State said the people of the Southeast should “re-engage” politically, stressing that the presidency cannot be achieved by sentiment alone.
