PDP Clears Air On Jonathan’s 2027 Presidential Candidacy

In a move to quell growing rumors, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday firmly denied reports that it had invited former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for the 2027 presidency.

Addressing the issue head-on, the party stated that there was no truth to the claims, asserting that such a conversation had not occurred. As the 2027 election season draws nearer, political circles continue to buzz with potential candidates, and the PDP’s swift rebuttal aims to set the record straight.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the party’s deputy spokesperson, explained during an interview with BBC Hausa that no such ticket had been issued to Jonathan, effectively putting an end to the speculation that had been gaining traction.

He also noted that the PDP has a variety of qualified individuals who could stand for president, adding that his earlier statements were misread, giving the false impression that Jonathan had been asked to return to politics through the party.

“The report that PDP has issued its presidential ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan or invited him to contest the 2027 presidential election is not true. What happened is this, I had an interview with a journalist where we discussed some issues.

“But in the course of the interview, he mentioned President Jonathan, asking about our opinion of him, because there are reports that he is being urged to run for the presidency.

I responded by saying that he (Jonathan) is eligible to contest the election, because he is a Nigerian and has the right to do that by the provision of the law, and he still has one more term left.”

“So, there is nothing wrong about him contesting the presidential election because he is eligible in the face of the law.”

The deputy spokesperson said the ticket would be given to someone who has shown interest in running for the presidency.
