Russia Hands Over 563 Fallen Soldiers’ Bodies To Ukraine

Ukraine revealed on Friday that it had secured the return of 563 soldiers’ bodies, a transfer facilitated by Russian officials. The deceased soldiers, the majority of whom perished in the brutal fighting in Donetsk’s eastern front, were part of the ongoing repatriation process.

Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the repatriation of prisoners and the bodies of deceased soldiers stands as one of the rare instances of collaboration between Moscow and Kyiv during the protracted war.

“The bodies of 563 fallen Ukrainian defenders were returned to Ukraine,” the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said in a statement on social media.

The announcement stands as one of the most significant repatriations of Ukrainian military personnel who lost their lives since the war started.

The statement indicated that 320 of the fallen soldiers’ remains had been returned from the Donetsk region, with 89 of them dying near Bakhmut, a town that was captured by Russian troops in May last year after an intense and costly battle.

The report also revealed that an additional 154 bodies, held in Russian morgues, were returned, highlighting the continuing, though difficult, process of bringing fallen soldiers back to their homeland.

The exact toll of military deaths from both sides remains undisclosed, with neither Russia nor Ukraine providing public details on the casualties.
