The Ebonyi chapter of Ohaneze-Ndigbo Worldwide has broken ranks with its national leadership, condemning the planned August 1 hunger protest as ill-advised. In a statement released on Monday, the chapter urged citizens to shun the protest, citing concerns about its potential consequences.

Chief Anya Okorie, spokesperson for the Ebonyi chapter of Ohaneze-Ndigbo Worldwide, released a statement on Monday, speaking on behalf of Dr. Peter Mbam and the chapter’s leadership. The statement explicitly condemned the planned August 1 hunger protest, distancing the chapter from the event.

The Ebonyi chapter’s statement, released to the press in Abakaliki, clarified that its rejection of the hunger protest is consistent with the national leadership’s decision to not endorse or participate in the event.

“Our national leadership has appealed especially to Igbo youths not to participate in the protest as the tribe is always the scapegoat of such issues.

“We join our national leadership in appealing to Igbos to support President Bola Tinubu as his administration’s policies would definitely address hardship in the country.

“The state leadership under Dr Peter Mbam therefore urges Ebonyi people to heed to our national leadership’s wise counsel,” the statement read.

The statement from the Ebonyi chapter of Ohaneze-Ndigbo Worldwide acknowledged and commended Governor Francis Nwifuru’s efforts to implement people-centric policies and programmes, which have yielded tangible benefits for the populace.

“These policies are anchored on the people’s charter of needs mantra as the governor has earned the citizen ‘s trust to solve their economic and social problems.

“The recent recruitment of 1,500 civil servants including health personnel across the state, payment of workers’ pension and gratuity arrears among others, are testaments of these policies,” the statement read.

The chapter’s statement celebrated the enduring legacy of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, its revered former National President, and vowed to perpetuate his ideals and accomplishments for generations to come.

“Ahaejiagamba (the name of pride) of the Igbos set out machineries to reposition the organisation and the results are evident.

“He was a priceless politician, businessman, philanthropist, pillar of sports, Igbo leader and statesman who contributed immensely to the unity and development of the country,” the statement read.
