Authorities in Ebonyi State have taken four suspects into custody in relation to the purported abduction and killing of Magnus Okeke, a student at Alex Ekwueme Federal University in Ikwo.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has initiated a probe into the student’s killing, with spokesperson DSP Joshua Ukandu revealing to Channels Television that detectives are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. It is still under investigation to establish if he was kidnapped for ransom if he was murdered, or if it is cult related. The suspects are still being interrogated,” Ukandu said.

Elom Ubochi, the university’s public relations officer, announced in a statement that the institution is actively coordinating with police and security agencies to facilitate a successful rescue operation, following the disturbing report of the student’s abduction.

The search for the missing student ended in heartbreak on Monday, June 17, 2024, when his decomposing remains were found beneath the bridge spanning Akọ stream in Nwakpu village, a somber discovery that came two weeks after his initial disappearance.

Investigations have led security personnel to suspect that the perpetrators of the heinous crime are a group of youths from Ohankwu village, a development that has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.

Ubochi further explained that there was no cult-related war on the university campus in which the victim was killed as insinuated in some quarters. The PRO appealed to anyone with useful information that could aid in the investigation to come forward and assist the authorities.

The deceased, Magnus Okeke, was a dedicated student of Accountancy at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, who was abducted on June 1, 2024, while heading back to his private accommodation in Ohankwu village, Ndufu-Alike community, a devastating incident that has left his family and friends in anguish.
