Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has given his nod to the single-term proposal for elected officeholders, but drew a clear line against granting self-governance to local areas, emphasizing the need to uphold the principles of federalism.

At The Platform Nigeria, an event organized by Covenant Nation, Governor Soludo presented a controversial solution to Nigeria’s financial crisis: merging the National Assembly’s two chambers into one, stressing the need for swift action to address the country’s fiscal predicament and avert insolvency.

Governor Soludo cautioned that granting autonomy to local governments would be a significant setback for Nigeria’s federal system, drawing parallels with the US.

He noted that American counties operate independently, without direct funding from the federal government, demonstrating a more viable approach to decentralization and local governance.

To address Nigeria’s governance challenges, Governor Soludo proposed a decentralization strategy, involving the devolution of powers from the Exclusive List to states and a reformed National Assembly with a limited representation of five members per state, fostering greater regional autonomy and accountability.

Governor Soludo absolved President Tinubu of culpability for Nigeria’s economic woes but urged him to rally the nation to tackle the fiscal challenges and avert financial collapse. He cautioned that increasing the money supply would only exacerbate inflationary pressures, stressing the need for urgent and collective action to address the crisis.
