MOUAU Honours Okpara, ASUU President, Others At Anniversary

Over the weekend, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, the weekend, honoured some prominent Nigerians, including former Premier of defunct Eastern Nigerian, the Late Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara, as part of its 30th anniversary and Founders’ Day celebrations.   

The Eastern Updates reports that a biennial lecture series was also instituted by the institution in honour of the late premier, who died 39 years ago.

At the event tagged, ‘Pearl Jubilee Celebration,’ the institution honoured past vice chancellors of the university, as well as other principal officers and staff, who excelled in their duties while serving the school.

Also in the honours’ list were Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) National President, Prof. Victor Osodeke, who got an award as pioneer PhD graduate of the university; former Abia State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning and later provost of the state’s College of Education Technical, Arochukwu, Dr. Phillips Nto, who got Excellence and Ambassador Award.

The Eastern Updates reports that among those that graced the event, were the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, President General Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, among others.

The state governor, Dr. Alex Otti, was the Chief Host of the event, while a goodwill message and keynote lecture was delivered on Saturday by the WTO boss and Soludo, respectively.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, had earlier noted that they chose to mark the anniversary with a public lecture, which is within the institution’s mandate as a university, being the maiden edition of Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara Lecture Series and launch of an endowment for the series.
