DSS Ordered By Court To Grant Kanu Access To Doctor Of Choice

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to grant the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, access to a medical doctor of his choice on grounds that he requires urgent ear surgery amidst his reported failing health.

Delivering judgement, Justice Nyako, also ordered the secret police to also monitor, record and seal all medical sessions administered to the IPOB leader, for security purposes.

The trial judge also dismissed the preliminary objections filed by the DSS challenging the application before it, on grounds that Kanu has the right to medical services even in detention.

The court, in its judgment, also ordered that all Kanu’s medical records be made available to the IPOB leader.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the DSS since June 2021, is facing terrorism-related charges brought against him by the secret police.

Recall IPOB has lambasted the Coalition of Northern Group (CNG) for calling on President Bola Tinubu not to release their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The Eastern Updates recalls that CNG had in a statement on Saturday, by its spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said Tinubu should not fall for the antics of IPOB and calls from the South-East asking for Kanu’s release.

Reacting, in a statement by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, on Wednesday, said the CNG’s call was a ‘laughable and disgraceful statement from the clueless Coalition of Northern Group.’

IPOB said, ‘The Coalition of Northern Group (CNG) that are advising the Nigerian President to allow the law to run its course are so clueless that they didn’t realize that the Appeal Court of Nigeria in Abuja has already discharged and acquitted Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

‘We would have ignored the group of herdsmen, but it’s important to educate them if only they will understand.

‘Nigeria’s government violates both local and international laws,’ it added.

Meanwhile, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel to the IPOB has condemned those who he described as ‘charlatans’ causing mayhem in the south-east.

The Eastern Update the 2023 Global terrorism index (GTI) ranking released in March 2023, IPOB was ranked as the 10th deadliest terror group in the world – with 40 attacks and 57 deaths in 2022.
