The All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State has recorded another high profile defection ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the younger brother of the Secretary to the State Government, Bello Nakwada, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.

The defection was confirmed on Thursday in a statement issued in Gusau by the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Malam Yusuf Idris. He said the move signals a growing shift within the state’s political landscape as preparations for future elections begin to gather momentum.

According to Idris, Nakwada, who is a biological brother to the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, formally announced his decision to abandon the PDP and align with the APC. He noted that the defector was a known supporter and campaign sponsor of Governor Dauda Lawal during the 2023 governorship election.

The APC spokesman also disclosed that a former PDP chairmanship aspirant in Gusau Local Government Area, Hon. Hassan Idris Gusau, had likewise defected to the ruling party.

Idris said both men were prominent figures within the PDP before their decision to switch allegiance.

“They were received alongside some of their supporters by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, in Abuja on Thursday,” the statement said.

In separate remarks after their defection, both politicians reportedly praised the internal cohesion of the APC, saying members were treated fairly regardless of background or status.

According to Idris, the defectors pointed to the leadership style of key party figures, including Dr Matawalle and former governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari, as a major factor behind their decision.

“They declared their total loyalty to the APC and its leadership and assured that their supporters and associates had fully endorsed the defection,” Idris said, adding that the new members pledged to work toward the party’s success in future elections.

While receiving the defectors, Matawalle assured them of full integration into the party structure. He said they would enjoy the same rights, privileges, and opportunities as other APC members.

The minister also urged them to mobilize their supporters to take part in the ongoing electronic registration of party members, which he described as key to strengthening the party ahead of future contests.

The latest defections add to a growing list of political realignments in Zamfara as parties position themselves for the next election cycle.
