The Anambra State Police Command has stepped up security across the state following an attack on a joint patrol team along the Abatete–Eziowelle Road in Idemili North Local Government Area on Wednesday.
Gunmen, whose identities remain unknown, ambushed officers from the Department of Operations, Awka, and the Special Anti-Cultism Squad during routine surveillance. The confrontation escalated into a gunfight, causing panic among residents in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants arrived in a convoy comprising a white Toyota Hummer bus, a black Lexus 350 SUV, and a white Toyota Highlander, all lacking visible registration numbers. They were reportedly clad in military and police-style uniforms.

“The attackers opened heavy fire on the patrol teams, prompting a fierce exchange,” one resident said. The gunmen reportedly retreated after several minutes. During the clash, a Special Anti-Cultism Squad patrol bus was set ablaze, while a Department of Operations pickup van sustained bullet damage. Footage circulating online shows the burning vehicle as locals fled the scene.
Confirming the incident, Police Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the armed group “engaged the patrol teams but were successfully repelled,” and emphasized that no civilians were harmed.
Ikenga further disclosed that Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu has ordered a statewide intensification of security measures. “All police divisions, formations, and patrol units have been placed on heightened alert to safeguard residents,” he said.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, or contact the Command’s emergency lines. The Anambra State Police Command reassured citizens of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
