Taiwan Fortifies Defense With American Battle Tanks

Listen to article

Amid escalating tensions with China, Taiwan has bolstered its defense capabilities by receiving 38 advanced M1A2 Abrams battle tanks from the United States, a significant step in strengthening its military preparedness and ensuring national security in the face of growing regional threats.

The first batch of 38 tanks, part of a larger order of 108 placed in 2019, arrived late Sunday and have been deployed to an army training base in Hsinchu, strategically located near Taiwan’s capital, Taipei. This delivery marks a key milestone in Taiwan’s ongoing military modernization efforts.

For the first time in thirty years, Taiwan has welcomed new tanks into its military arsenal. The M1A2 Abrams, renowned for their cutting-edge technology and formidable firepower, will replace older models such as the domestically-produced CM 11 Brave Tigers and the aging US-made M60A3s, significantly modernizing Taiwan’s tank force amid escalating security concerns.

Taiwan’s increasing dependence on US arms is a direct response to China’s unyielding pursuit of reunification, which could involve force. As tensions escalate, Taiwan has turned to the United States for critical military support, aiming to bolster its defenses and deter potential Chinese aggression, thereby strengthening its position in the ongoing struggle for sovereignty.

The arrival of these tanks is part of a larger order totaling more than $1.2 billion, with further shipments expected by 2025 and 2026.

Despite logistical delays, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and global arms supply challenges, Taiwan continues to increase its defense budget, with a record $19 billion allocated for 2024.

This development comes amidst rising military pressures from China, which regularly conducts military drills around Taiwan, including large-scale naval exercises in the region. Taiwan’s strategic military buildup, including the acquisition of the Abrams tanks, is aimed at strengthening its defense against any potential threats.
