Six Perish In Devastating Indian Hospital Fire

At least six lives were lost, and over 25 people sustained injuries when a fire engulfed a private hospital in southern India, police announced on Friday. The tragedy highlights the critical need for stringent fire safety protocols, especially in healthcare facilities where vulnerable patients are at risk.

India frequently grapples with building fires, often a result of inadequate firefighting resources and a widespread neglect of safety standards. These recurring incidents underline the urgent need for stricter enforcement of fire regulations across the country.

Late Thursday, a fire broke out in Tamil Nadu, one of India’s southern states, prompting an ongoing investigation into its cause. Authorities have yet to determine what sparked the flames as they sift through the aftermath.

All six victims were found unconscious inside a lift at the hospital in Dindigul, the Press Trust of India confirmed. The grim discovery has led to a wave of speculation, with investigators now focusing on determining how the fire unfolded in such a deadly way.

According to Police Superintendent A. Pradeep, about 30 individuals were hurt in the incident, but he assured AFP that all of them were stable. The report came as a slight comfort, considering the severe nature of the fire that had already claimed lives.

The fire started at the reception area on the ground floor and rapidly spread to the other floors, the Times of India newspaper reported.

The blaze came just weeks after 10 newborns were killed when a fire engulfed a hospital in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this year, a similar fire broke out at a children’s hospital in New Delhi that killed six infants.

At least 27 people were killed, including several children, when a fire broke out at a packed amusement park arcade in May in the western state of Gujarat.
