The White House confirmed on Monday that US President Joe Biden will be present at Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, describing the decision as a reflection of his unwavering commitment to upholding the democratic principles of the nation.
This gesture emphasizes the importance of continuity and unity in American democracy, regardless of political differences.
In contrast, Donald Trump had notably skipped Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021. At the time, Trump had refused to attend, continuing to falsely claim that the 2020 election was stolen, a narrative that fueled the violent January 6th Capitol insurrection by his supporters.
“The president promised that he would attend the inauguration of whomever won the election,” news agency AFP quoted Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates as saying.
“He and the first lady are going to honor that promise and attend the inauguration.”
Bates remarked that for President Biden, attending the inauguration is much more than a symbolic act; it reflects his deep commitment to the fundamental democratic values that the country stands for. By doing so, Biden aims to honor the collective decision of the electorate, reinforcing the strength of the democratic process.
