Donald Trump, the newly elected U.S. President, appointed Florida’s conservative lawmaker Matt Gaetz as attorney general on Wednesday. Gaetz, a strong ally known for standing by Trump during intense legal controversies and impeachment trials, has now been entrusted with one of the most significant positions in the administration.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System,” Trump posted on social media. “Matt will end Weaponized Government… and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.”
President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Congressman Matt Gaetz as attorney general reflects a reward for loyalty and an alignment of values in what Trump describes as a fight against the “partisan weaponization” of the U.S. Justice Department.
Known for his outspoken criticism of the DOJ, Gaetz has consistently echoed Trump’s grievances over what they see as political bias within federal investigations, especially in cases involving the former president. Gaetz’s radical approach to justice aligns with Trump’s vision for substantial changes in the department.

Gaetz is also no stranger to controversy. His recent actions to challenge House leadership, notably contributing to the ousting of Speaker Kevin McCarthy, highlight his influence in far-right Republican circles. However, Gaetz’s appointment is likely to face significant scrutiny in the Senate, especially given ongoing House Ethics Committee investigations involving alleged misconduct.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has pledged a rigorous confirmation process, hinting at potentially contentious hearings for such a key role.
Trump’s selection of Gaetz sends a clear signal about the direction his administration intends to take on law enforcement and justice reform. Gaetz’s role will be pivotal as the administration seeks to redefine federal agency priorities and address perceived “politicization” within the justice system.
Through this appointment, Trump is underscoring his commitment to reshaping the Justice Department to align with his vision of a more ideologically consistent enforcement of law and order in America.
