Abia Set To Implement ₦70,000 Minimum Wage October

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Abia State Government revealed that the rollout of the new minimum wage of N70,000 would begin in October 2024. This move is part of a broader effort to provide support to workers and ensure they receive fair compensation for their contributions.

Publishing details on Tuesday morning after the State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti the previous day, the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, explained, “This was because of its disposition towards workers in the state.” He underscored the administration’s focus on enhancing the working conditions of its employees.

“The state government is committed towards the minimum wage and because of this, within the next couple of days, the payment of the minimum wage will commence.

He averred that “it is known that there is a national minimum wage and the state will take it from there. However, if the governor wants to deviate from there, so be it.”

Nonetheless, in his speech, Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confidently confirmed that the state is committed to paying the national minimum wage of N70,000. He stressed that this measure is crucial for supporting workers and fostering a more equitable work environment.

Additionally, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed plans for the procurement of nine new road projects spanning the three senatorial zones of the state. He stated that these projects are designed to enhance road networks and facilitate smoother travel for all citizens..
