Listen to article

The residents of Ikenegbu Extension, a peaceful community close to Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State, have grown weary of the neglected condition of their road and have called on the state government to take steps to improve their quality of life.

The residents of Ikenegbu Extension have expressed concern that the deteriorating state of their road poses significant safety and ecological hazards to their children and pregnant women.

The once-paved road in Ikenegbu Extension has fallen into a state of disrepair, as some residents have turned it into a dumpsite, creating an unhealthy environment for the community.

Mr. August Njoku, a resident of Ikenegbu Extension, revealed to the press that the stench from the dumpsite in their area has made children and pregnant women particularly susceptible to illness, resulting in frequent trips to the hospital.

August Njoku, a resident of Ikenegbu Extension, highlighted the impact of the dumpsite on the daily lives of the residents, noting that they have been forced to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid the mosquitoes and stench.

Another resident, Mrs Gladys Anyanwu, a teacher, disclosed that the rainy season had worsened the problem as passers-by found it difficult to pass through the road as a result of the flood, dirt, and safety concerns.

She called on the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to come to their rescue before they die.

Also speaking, Mrs Betty Cheta, a trader, lamented that the road had turned into a death trap, noting that some churches had lost their members as a result of growing criminality on the road.

She recalled that in 2022, the Chief of Staff to the governor of Imo State, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie visited the area to inspect the evacuation of waste and wondered why the government did not extend road construction to the area.

Adding his voice, the Regional Pastor of the Community of Hashem, Owerri, Levite Ofili, decried the situation as very unbearable and called on Governor Uzodimma to come to the rescue of the people living around the area by evacuating the wastes and reconstruct the road to enable them to enjoy fresh air and good road network.

He equally prayed to God to give the governor and his cabinet more wisdom to pilot the affairs of the state.
