PDP Crisis: Court Kicks Out Suit Seeking Damagum’s Sack

The Katsina State High Court has kicked out a suit which moves to seek the removal of Umar Iliya Damagum as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The suit, which had been filed by Ibrahim Musa, a member of the PDP, challenged Damagum’s appointment, while also arguing that the replacement of former National Chairman Dr Iyorchia Ayu was unconstitutional.

Musa contended that Ayu’s successor should have been chosen from the North-Central geopolitical zone, the region where Ayu hails from.

But, Justice Abdullahi Bawa-Faskari dismissed the case, ruling that the matter falls under the internal affairs of the party.

The judge held that the matter is beyond the court’s jurisdiction.

In his ruling, he upheld the preliminary objection raised by the first and second defendants, declaring the case “not justiciable” as it pertains solely to party matters.

“The matter is not justiciable being one which falls entirely within the internal affairs of the party, and the court has no jurisdiction,” Justice Bawa-Faskari said.

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has called for the immediate release of High Chief Albert Uchenna Ahanonu, the party’s candidate for the Owerri North chairmanship who had been detained after the elections.

Ahanonu was arrested on September 22, 2024, just a day after a disputed election that was marred by missing result sheets, which ultimately led to the declaration of APC candidates as winners across the state.

APGA officials alleged that Ahanonu’s arrest is politically motivated, intended to prevent him from filing a petition at the election tribunal regarding the irregularities of the September 21 election.
