The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) achieved a clean sweep in the recent local government elections, winning all 27 chairmanship positions across local councils and securing 305 wards and councillorship seats throughout the state.
Charles Ejiogu, the Chairman of the Commission, proclaimed this outcome during a briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, on Monday, highlighting the APC’s sweeping success in the recent elections.
He emphasized that the election adhered strictly to the established electoral laws and guidelines of the state, confidently declaring it to be a credible process that was both free and fair.
In a prompt response, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state condemned the election, labeling it a fraudulent exercise that fundamentally undermines the core principles of democracy.
As he congratulated the APC candidates on their election victories, Macdonald Ebere, the chairman of the party in the state, dismissed the PDP’s allegations as utterly baseless and without any factual support.

It is expected that the 27 LG chairmen and 305 councillors would receive their certificates of return and would be sworn in. Imo State has an APC governor Hope Uzodimma in office.
Over 15 states have announced or held local government elections in the last two months since the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to the third tier of government, ordering the Federal Government to pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the 774 LGs in the country directly to their exclusive accounts and not to accounts controlled by governors.
The apex court in the landmark judgement in July also barred power-drunk governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
