Constitutional law expert Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu has fired back at those demanding Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s exit, advising them to find a more constructive outlet for their energies.

Orizu, principal partner at Friends Chambers, insisted that Akpabio’s commitment to the country’s well-being should not be derailed by frivolous calls for his resignation.

Over the weekend, Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu, a respected figure from Nnewi, Anambra State, met with journalists at the city’s revered palace, where he shared his perspectives on the latest developments in the Senate President Godswill Akpabio saga.

Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu drove home his point, characterizing the clamor for Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s resignation as unwarranted.

He astutely noted that Akpabio’s role is merely that of a presiding officer, tasked with announcing the collective decisions of the senate, rather than unilaterally shaping its agenda.

The prince highlighted the multifaceted nature of the senate, comprising senators from various opposition parties, each with their own distinct interests.

He noted that some senators, who had vied for the presidency but lost to Akpabio, had also coveted the seat, underscoring the intense competition for the position. Orizu stressed that Akpabio, as senate president, should not be singled out for the decisions made by the senate as a whole.

The prince astutely observed that the personalization of the senate president’s lifestyle, whether based on fact or fiction, is inconsequential to his official duties.

He emphasized that Akpabio’s personal life, real or perceived, should not be used as a yardstick to measure his performance as senate president.

Nwafor-Orizu said: “It should be noted that a legislative house that agrees with everything by the executive makes a supplusage and a waste of public fund. In the other hand, a legislative house that opposes everything from the executive leads to anarchy and standstill of government’s operation.

“Therefore, the Senate and indeed, the National Assembly is functioning between these two opposite schools of thought. It is true that the senate has in the past rejected proposals from the government. If I am wrong, was it not the senate that refused el’Rufai being a minister? Therefore, other situations where the senate disagrees with the executive and other situations where they agree with the executive.”
