A trailblazing collaboration between the Enugu State Government and a group of visionary Nigerians abroad is set to give birth to a futuristic medical city, boasting a staggering investment of over $300 million.
This game-changing venture will not only bolster the state’s healthcare infrastructure but also showcase the power of diaspora engagement.
A pioneering medical city is set to transform Enugu State into a beacon of medical tourism in Africa, offering a comprehensive range of services that will redefine the region’s healthcare paradigm.
As part of this visionary project, the state government will provide 100 hectares of land, garnering a 10% stake in the SPV and paving the way for a thriving partnership that will propel Enugu to the forefront of Africa’s medical landscape.
Governor Peter Mbah’s warm reception for the African Medical City executive and management at the Enugu Government House marked a significant milestone in the state’s economic journey.
By embracing this trailblazing project, Mbah is delivering on his campaign promise to turbocharge Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, while cementing its status as a premier hub for business, investment, tourism, and exceptional living experiences.
In a bid to instill confidence in the Nigerian medical doctors turned investors, Governor Mbah made a solemn commitment that his government would expedite its responsibilities to ensure the project’s timely completion.
He lamented that the country’s outdated medical infrastructure has led to a staggering $1 billion annual outflow of Nigerian patients seeking quality healthcare abroad, a trend he’s determined to reverse through this innovative initiative.
“What we are witnessing here today is monumental, and we cannot take the value and the significance of it for granted. This is in line with the humongous promise we made to our people during our campaign for office to grow our GDP exponentially from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
“But we recognised that a lot of that growth will come from the private sector; and we also recognised that it has to be enabled by the government. So, our strategy was to have a government-enabled, but private sector-driven economy.

“So, coming to Enugu with an investment size of over $300 million, we knew it was something that must not escape us when we heard of it. We must do everything necessary to ensure that the investment is not only sitting here, but that we also recruit you as one of our testimonials, people who can market Enugu based on your experience in terms of how we made it easy for you to come here and invest and how we have also shown transparency, accountability and integrity in the entire process.
“You can be assured that we will discharge all those obligations creditably,” the governor said.
Dr. Ethelbert Nwanegbo, Chairman of the African Medical City, revealed that his group was drawn to Enugu by the state’s business-friendly environment and the forward-thinking investment policies championed by the current administration, making it an ideal location for their pioneering project.
