In a bid to tackle rising security concerns, Abia State Government has announced a nighttime restriction on tricycles and motorcycles in Aba and Umuahia. From next month, these vehicles will only be allowed to operate during daylight hours, with a 7 pm to 6 am curfew in place.

After a closed-door meeting with transport stakeholders, Commissioner Uzor Nwachukwu addressed the press, unveiling the state’s decision to impose a curfew on tricycles and motorcycles. The move, he explained, is designed to tackle security challenges in Aba and Umuahia.

According to Commissioner Nwachukwu, the curfew aims to create a secure environment for the state’s residents and citizens, shielding them from potential harm and ensuring the protection of their property.

Commissioner Nwachukwu expressed concern over the escalating security issues in the state, particularly the involvement of tricycles in criminal activities like pickpocketing and robbery, necessitating swift action to restore order.

“The state government has decided to curb the operations of the criminals who use this means of transport to perpetrate criminal activities,” Nwachukwu stated.

To facilitate a smooth registration process, a dedicated committee has been set up, chaired by Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd), with representatives from various government agencies. Their task? To ensure that all tricycles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles are registered and accounted for.

The commissioner stressed that the ultimate goal of the registration exercise is to establish a clear identity of the genuine owners and operators of these vehicles, crucial for security reasons, to prevent their use for nefarious activities.

The commissioner also assured that the government will periodically assess the restriction and consider revising it when circumstances dictate, ensuring the measures remain effective and adaptive to the state’s evolving security needs.

Leaders from various transport unions, who attended the meeting, expressed their support for the government’s decision, acknowledging the need for a curfew to ensure public safety and reduce criminal activity.
