Heartbreak and outrage gripped Nsukka, Enugu State, after a police officer’s bullet allegedly cut short the life of a young reveler, Amuche, on Echara Road. The officer’s name is being withheld, but his actions have sparked widespread condemnation.
Sources close to the investigation disclosed that a team of policemen, dressed in plainclothes, had converged on a popular relaxation center in the area, looking to blow off some steam. However, their night of revelry ended in bloodshed.
The fateful night was last Sunday, when the sounds of laughter and music at a local relaxation center in Nsukka, Enugu State, were abruptly interrupted by the sound of gunfire, leaving one young life lost forever.
Witnesses described how a group of policemen, dressed in plainclothes, had assembled at the spot, looking to blow off some steam. But their night of revelry ended in tragedy, as one of their own allegedly pulled the trigger, taking a young life.
The night’s revelry turned ugly when a plainclothes policeman, allegedly under the influence, made a reckless move, dancing with a woman suspected to be a sex worker in front of a bar, setting off a violent chain reaction that would leave one young man dead.
During the dance, the woman claimed that the policeman inappropriately touched her breasts, sparking a heated argument. Disturbed by the incident, she promptly brought the matter to the attention of the center’s management.
“She alerted the management of the chalet and the manager had a heated argument with the policeman. In the process, they slapped each other. At that point, the manager went inside the charlet and mobilized some boys who work there.

“The manager then slapped the policeman when he returned with the boys. It was at that point that other policemen who were in company of the one dancing with the lady, joined intervened to rescue their embattled colleague.
”In the process one of them pulled an AK-47 riffle from their car and shot to disperse the crowd that gathered following the chaotic situation. A stray bullet then hit Amuche, who was playing snooker at a corner of the charlet at the time incident started. The victim was said to be already rushing to leave the venue when he was hit by the bullet.
“The policemen equally whisked away the manager of the charlet on the ground that he assaulted their colleague”, one the sources who pleaded for anonymity narrated.
The incident was said to have sparked a protest in the area as irate youths carried the corpse and protested to the Nsukka Police Division where they were asked to go and deposit the remains in the morgue.
Despite multiple efforts to contact Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu State police command spokesman, through text and WhatsApp, no response had been received by the time of publishing this report.
