Truck Kills Woman, Leaves Two Injured In Anambra

Pedestrians at the Onitsha-Asaba bridgehead sufferd tragedy on Thursday as a heavy-duty lorry collided with them, leading to the death of one female victim, whose identity remains unknown, while two others suffered injuries.

According to information gathered by The Eastern Updates, the crash was reportedly caused by brake failure as the driver descended the River Niger bridge toward Asaba, resulting in the loss of control of the vehicle and its collision with pedestrians along the roadside.

In an official statement, C. A. Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer responsible for Public Education at the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, affirmed the occurrence of the crash. He stated that the injured victims were swiftly conveyed to the hospital, while the deceased woman was transferred to Toronto Mortuary.

Iyiegbuniwe relayed a statement from the Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressing sympathy for the families of the victims.

He was also quoted as advising motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles and adhere to traffic rules.

Iyiegbuniwe said, “The crash occurred today, April 4. 2024 at about 3:20hrs of the day along Onitsha-Asaba Bridgehead.

“It involved an articulated white and green Mercedes Benz vehicle with registration number NKE25LG.

Based on the report, the vehicle experienced brake malfunction, leading to a collision with pedestrians. It noted that two individuals sustained injuries, with the unfortunate demise of one woman.

Upon reaching the location, it was stated that FRSC personnel transported the two wounded individuals to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, while the deceased were conveyed to Toronto Mortuary.

“The vehicle had a brake failure and rammed into people. Two persons were injured and one female was killed.

“On arrival at the scene, FRSC men took the two injured persons to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, while the dead were taken to Toronto Mortuary”, he said.
