Why Merger Of Opposition Parties Cannot Remove APC –Okechukwu

Former Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, has explained why the recent calls for merger by opposition political parties to remove the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), won’t work.

Okechukwu, who is a foundation member of APC, shared his opinion on Monday in Enugu while reacting to the recent calls for merger trumpeted by Prof. Pat Utomi and former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, while commenting on the recent presidential election in Senegal.

According to the ex-VON boss, the call lacks proper contextual foundation and dynamism.

The Eastern Updates recalls that there has been strident calls for merger by Utomi, Atiku and a host of others from major opposition parties while congratulating Bassirou Faye, Senegal’s President-elect, for repeating the feat achieved by the ruling APC in 2015.

Okechukwu, who was a member of the merger committee that midwifed APC into a formidable opposition in 2013, said there are many reasons to outrightly dismiss these recent merger calls and the erroneous premises on which they were anchored.

“First of all, on the possibility that the persistent call for opposition political parties to forge a formidable coalition to oust the APC like the PDP was defeated in 2015, the circumstances and dynamism on the ground differ remarkably.

“Secondly, dethroning an incumbent President should not be a political pastime, but as a practical political consciousness to remove an underperforming administration.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, sure and steady, is performing and there is more allocations to state governments,” the APC chieftain said.

In another report, hundreds of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members including Senator Chukwuka Utazi and former Minister for Defense, Fidelia Njeze and their supporters have been formally welcomed into the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Enugu State, The Eastern Updates reports.

Those who were on ground to welcome the defectors during official welcome include the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, APC National Deputy Chairman, South, Chief Emma Eneukwu, APC National Vice Chairman South East, Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu and the Chairman of the Party in Enugu State, Chief Ugo Agballa.

Speaking on his defection, Senator Utazi who represented Enugu North Senatorial district at the National Assembly between 2015 and 2023 said that he is joining APC because the only way to realize the Presidency of Igbo extraction was to join APC.
