Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have attacked a police checkpoint at Ebiya Bridge along the Hilltop area of Ebonyi Local Government area of Ebonyi State, The Eastern Updates reports.

According to highly reliable sources in the area, no fewer than six policemen were brutally murdered, and two girls suspected to be civilians were said to have equally been killed during the violent attack.

The attack on police operatives at the Ebiya Bridge police checkpoint is not new as a similar incident happened on November 17, 2023, where two police officers on patrol were murdered by suspected gunmen.

The Ebonyi Police Command is yet to confirm this latest incident as several calls placed to the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, remained unanswered.

The Eastern Updates reports that Friday’s attack is the latest in the long list of assaults on police facilities in the South-East. Several public facilities have been attacked in the region with security agencies and others dying in the process.

In another report, a 44-year-old farmer whose name has been given as Mr Anayo Agah, has appealed to the Nigeria Police authorities to investigate an Inspector, Patrick Mbam, who allegedly invaded his house with a team of miscreants and beat up his mother, nursing wife, destroyed his house and looted his property.

According to Agah, who spoke with reporters on Friday, the police would have further fixed their image by launching a probe into why the officer, who was arrested, indicted in the crimes allegedly committed and subjected to Orderly Room trial, still walks freely on the streets boastfully.

A police document obtained by The Eastern Updates reveals that Mbam, who hails from Okaria village, Amachi community in the Abakaliki Local Government of Ebonyi State, armed with some dangerous weapons allegedly led some people into the area on November 14, 2023 and began to cause havoc. Further investigations revealed that no fewer than eight houses including shops were destroyed, over 250 bags of rice and other valuables looted during the incident.
