Enugu: Gov Mbah Postpones Reopening Of Collapsed Bridge

The Government of Enugu State has declared that it has deferred the reopening of one lane of the collapsed Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway Bridge following advice from expert.

The government explained that it received advice from the project manager, Mr Mohammed Fadi, not to reopen the bridge ‘for safety purposes’ until it had been fully completed.

Commissioner for Information and Communication Aka-Eze Aka made this disclosure in a statement issued in Enugu and made available to newsmen on Monday.

The Eastern Updates recalls that the Commissioner for Works, Gerald Otiji, had said at a post-State Executive Council meeting news briefing on December 25 that one lane of the bridge would be reopened for motorists to ease traffic during the Yuletide celebrations.

However, Aka explained that the bridge would no longer be reopened as announced.

He said, based on the expert advice, it should, on completion, be subjected to a series of integrity tests to certify it fit for public use.

In another report, the rescue of their four children abducted by a tenant identified as Ifeoma Abonyi, a 35-year-old woman from Asaba, Delta State has left their parents rejoicing in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

The Eastern Updates recalls that one of the mothers had reported the alleged abduction by an unidentified tenant to the police on 16th of December.

The children belonging to three different parents were identified as Joy Udoma (Female – three years), Ogbonna Udoma (Male – six years), Chioma Kingsley (Female – five years) and Miracle Ikechukwu (Female – five years).

However, the police said all the the four missing children have been rescued, while their abductor was also arrested in a statement on Sunday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Maureen Chinaka said in a statement stated that two of the children were rescued on December 22, while another two were rescued on Sunday.
