4 Suspected Criminals Apprehended, Pistol Recovered In Enugu

The Police Command in Enugu State has disclosed that in the last two weeks, it arrested no fewer than four suspected criminals and recovered locally fabricated arms and ammunition.

The command also revealed that it recovered ATM cards used by criminals to defraud bank customers whose genuine cards must have been swapped.

The spokesperson of the command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives foiled a robbery attempt in the state capital on December 7, when they arrested a 29-year-old male suspect and recovered one locally made pistol, while his accomplices fled the scene. He said on November 26, operatives arrested a 26-year-old male, also in the state capital, and recovered a locally fabricated double-barreled pistol.

In a related development, operatives on routine stop-and-search duty, along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, arrested a 22-year-old male, who had two live cartridges on him.

Ndukwe said further that operatives, in conjunction with security guards at a commercial bank, arrested a 26-year-old male in the state capital on December 6, for swapping the ATM cards of bank customers.

‘Several ATM cards bearing different names were recovered from him. He confessed he had engaged in ATM swapping for some time. His gang members, however, escaped.’

He added that Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, reaffirmed commitment of the police to maintain security, law and order, especially during Yuletide.

The commissioner enjoins citizens to remain law-abiding, be vigilant, and continue to support the police with information to rid the state of criminals,’ Ndukwe said.

In another report, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has declared that its operatives has managed to intercept no fewer than 12 consignments of cocaine belonging to members of a drug trafficking organisation at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, AIIA, Enugu.

The NDLEA reports that a 44-year-old businessman named Augustine Justine Emeka, who purportedly deals in copper wire, was detained at the airport upon arriving from Douala, Cameroon via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on an Ethiopia Airlines aircraft carrying the 12 consignments, which included 797 kilogrammes of cocaine pellets.

The agency said the suspect, during a preliminary interview, admitted the cocaine consignments were for delivery to 12 different persons in the country.
