FRSC Mourns Victims Of Anambra Road Crash, Calls For Measures

Dauda Biu who is the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has condoled with the families of victims of the crash along the Onitsha-Awka Expressway, Anambra State over the weekend. 

The Eastern Updates reports that the fatal crash happened sometime on Friday morning, involving a Mitsubishi L300 commercial Bus with vehicle registration number XE 245 AWK and a DAF Leyland Truck with registration number T-19094 LA at the Odumodu Junction by Nteje.

At least five persons were reported to have lost their lives in the road accident.

It was gathered that the accident which occurred at about 7:30am was caused when the container of the truck fell on the commercial bus, as the driver was navigating through the failed portion of the road.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the two vehicles were en route to different locations – one was said to be going to Awka while the other was going to Onitsha.

About 10 people, comprising three male adults and seven female adults were involved in the crash.

The source said, “Five persons, all female, were killed, while two male adults and two female adults sustained various degrees of injuries and one male adult was rescued unhurt.

“The two vehicles got to the spot at the same time and due to the weight of the truck, the container fell on the bus and crashed.”

In a statement signed by the Corps Spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem on Friday, the Corps Marshal also called on commercial vehicle operators, to exercise caution and be conscious of their environments whenever they drive, and also to avoid driving against stipulated speed limit on all roads.

According to Kazeem, the advise is to “To eradicate all incidences of road mishap arising from impatience and lack of mental alertness when on wheels.”

Biu also commended FRSC operatives for their prompt response to the distressing situation which led to immediate evacuation of the victims of the crash to Divine Care Hospital Umunya and Chira Hospital for medical attention, and the clearance of obstruction to ensure free flow of traffic within the axis.
