The 2023 Mass Literacy Campaign has been initiated by Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, the First Lady of Ebonyi State, with a grand flag-off ceremony.

Nwifuru commenced the campaign at the Women Development Centre Abakaliki, the state capital on Tuesday, where she appealed to the 13 Local Government Area chairmen to ensure effective monitoring and supervision of the grassroots campaigns.

According to her, ‘The programme is aimed at igniting the spark of knowledge, empowering individuals, transforming lives, and achieving education for all.’

‘I appreciate the present administration in the state for the commitment shown so far in the cause of mass literacy, which in turn has prepared a solid ground for education is accessibility and affordability by all.’

‘The campaign is a resolute commitment towards ensuring that no one is left behind in the Ebonyi project.’

‘The Mass Literacy programme will be devoid of discrimination of any sort. So, I call on the Council Chairmen, Traditional Rulers and Donor Agencies to partner with the Government in prosecuting the Education for All programme so as to fill the gap of ignorance; enhance economic development; women empowerment; and then, foster civic engagement.’

Prior to this, Prof Paul Nwaobashi, the Commissioner for Education and Chairman of the occasion, expressed gratitude to the governor and his wife for revitalizing adult education in the state.

The proponent confidently asserted that the initiative, in all its facets, would be approached with meticulous care and undivided attention.

Such a prudent and thoughtful approach is set to yield fruitful results, leaving a lasting and significant impact on every aspect of the state’s growth and development.

At its core, this campaign seeks to dismantle barriers, whether they be social, economic, or educational, that might hinder the progress of any citizen within the state.

It addresses the needs of the most vulnerable and marginalised, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their rights are protected. By doing so, it paves the way for a society that thrives on unity and empowers its people to reach their full potential.
