NYSC Worried Over Infrastructure At Abia Orientation Camp

Listen to article

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has held a lecture event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the scheme in the country, with an urgent call for rehabilitation of its permanent site in Abia State.

Dr. Gift Candida, the assistant director of human resources at the NYSC office in Abia, made the announcement while presenting a lecture on ‘Five Decades of Fostering National Unity and Development.’

She made an appeal to the Abia State Government, corporate entities, and competent citizens in the State to help the NYSC by providing the necessary infrastructure in the permanent site, Umunna, Bende LGA, and NYSC State headquarters in Umuahia.

She lamented how difficult it was for many firms to pay corps members’ stipend or provide housing for them.

She listed some of the achievements of NYSC in the country to include agricultural and educational development, healthcare delivery, unity, skills acquisition and sanitation of host areas.

In her own address, Abia State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Dick Ufuoma-Iruenabere, complained about decaying infrastructure at the scheme’s permanent site in Umunna Bende LGA, which she said has been under erosion menace.

Iruenabere listed the areas affected in the permanent camp to include the parade ground, hostel and staff quarters and appealed to the Abia State Government and corporate organizations to come to their aid.

“Immediate intervention is needed to implement erosion control measures to prevent further damage to the camp’s infrastructure”, she appealed.

Apart from these, Iruenabere complained that State Secretariat in Umuahia did not have adequate office space and utilities, saying that the poor infrastructure was affecting smooth service delivery.

She used the event to announce that Abia State NYSC came first in the maiden NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) competition held in Abuja.
